After a long time away from Fortress Cottenham Park, we faced alcoholic friends, Chudley Ales on what turned out to be a glorious Sunday afternoon. Man of the Match was Farrukh, who made a late appearance as our Mascot and simply did not put a foot wrong.
Matthew Shah was our debutant and a very welcome addition to the club. He was robbed blind first ball, having waited patiently whilst runs were put on steadily by Hashim (44 runs) and Mitesh. A mini collapse followed the strong platform of 125-1 that was set and a lovely knock of 31 runs from Chaitanya pushed WUCC to a match winning score. Well played Chai, ably supported by Peter Brown (who really should bat for the team, rather than his average).
Peter was buoyed by his lovely innings and tea and ripped out a hapless opener’s leg stump in the very first ball of their innings, a shame for the poor lad. A strong start became very strong when six wickets tumbled quickly, with a particularly stunning catch from Skipper Gary being noteworthy. We then dropped four catches and could not end the innings and had to bowl 40 torturous overs which ended in Jono thinking he is Jimmy Neesham (Skipper confirmed he will not bowl again this season) and an excellent win by 21 runs.
